Nampa Water Softener & Filtration Services
Nampa's water comes from 17 city wells, and like all of southern Idaho it's hard — the city's 2025 water report lists up to 7.08 grains per gallon. That's enough to scale a water heater and spot every glass in the dishwasher. Aqua Source tests your water first and sizes the softener to your actual result.
What Nampa's 2025 water report actually says.
The City of Nampa serves more than 110,000 customers from 17 groundwater wells in the Treasure Valley aquifer. As that water moves through basalt and sediment it picks up calcium and magnesium, and the city's 2025 report lists hardness from none up to 7.08 grains per gallon (about 121 mg/L) — the top of that range counts as hard on the USGS scale.
Hardness is only part of the picture. The same report lists arsenic up to 6.1 ppb (2023 sampling) and nitrate up to 6.1 ppm, both under the federal limit of 10. In 2022 one Nampa well measured 32 ppb uranium, over the 30 ppb limit, and the city took it out of service. Homes on private wells outside city service should test every year.
Nampa water, by the numbers
Here’s what the City of Nampa’s 2025 water quality report shows, in plain terms. All results met federal standards.
- Supply: 17 groundwater wells serving more than 110,000 customers. Nampa doesn’t add fluoride.
- Hardness: none to 7.08 grains per gallon (about 121 mg/L). The top of that range counts as “hard” on the USGS scale.
- Arsenic: not detected to 6.1 ppb (2023 sampling). The federal limit is 10 ppb.
- Nitrate: not detected to 6.1 ppm. The limit is 10 ppm.
- Uranium: up to 20 ppb. The limit is 30 ppb. In 2022 one well measured 32 ppb, and the city took it out of service.
- PFAS: Nampa has tested since 2014 and reports no positive detection.

What that means for a Nampa home
For most homes on city water, the issue is scale, not safety. Around 7 grains per gallon is enough to coat a water heater, spot glassware, and wear out faucets and showerheads. It’s also less than the “18 grains” you’ll see quoted online, which matters: a softener sized to your real number is often smaller, uses less salt, and costs less to run. We size to your test, not a guess.
If you want better drinking water, an under-sink reverse osmosis system reduces the arsenic, nitrate, and uranium the report lists. And about 29% of Nampa homes were built in 2010 or later. Idaho requires new slab-on-grade and finished-basement homes to include a pre-plumbed softener loop, so many newer Nampa houses are ready for a quick install.
Private wells around Nampa
Outside city service, nobody tests your water unless you do. Idaho DEQ ranks northeast Canyon County #6 of 35 nitrate priority areas statewide, and the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare recommends testing wells every year for bacteria and nitrate and every 3–5 years for metals. A softener won’t remove nitrate or bacteria, and wells with iron need an iron filter ahead of the softener. For every city’s figures side by side, see our guide to water treatment services in Boise.

Common questions from Nampa homeowners.
Why is Nampa's water so hard?
Nampa draws its water from 17 groundwater wells in the Treasure Valley aquifer. As the water moves through basalt and sediment it picks up calcium and magnesium. The city's 2025 water report lists hardness from none up to 7.08 grains per gallon; the top of that range counts as hard on the USGS scale. Private wells vary, so a test at your tap gives the real number.
Is a water softener worth it in Nampa?
For most homes, yes. Even at around 7 grains per gallon, scale builds up in water heaters, dishwashers, and on fixtures, and soap and detergent work harder. A softener sized to your actual test result protects appliances and plumbing. Our free in-home test tells you whether you need one before you spend anything.
